Standardized testing: two words that can strike fear into the heart of any child. However, with the new test they re rolling out this year, the STAAR test, there is great fear not only among the children, but also among the faculty. It has been reported to be a lot more difficult and even longer. No one knows what to expect. It begins next week.

Every child I ve spoken with has said they felt not ready . Most teachers I ve conversed with feel their children aren t ready . The tension in the classroom and out is high. A lot rests on the scores of these tests. The pressure is on!

This is a great time to pick up the phone and call your mentee. To pray with them. To encourage them. To plan a reading date with them. To give them a prompt to write about. To give pointers and tips on how to keep calm while taking a difficult test. Did I mention pray with them? It s a really vital time in your mentee s life; a perfect opportunity to demonstrate His love and be His arms reaching out. Don t let this week and next pass you by (the second portion of the test will be administered in April).
