Introduction: God s miracles are not for us to be impressed but for us to believe in Him. To trust that He is who He says He is. Jesus displays His first miracle and the response is worship and belief. His motive is never to impress but show His glory and bring people to faith in Him.
Key Passage: John 2:1-12
Scripture & Discussion:
- Why does Jesus initially not want to bother with the wine? (v.4)
- What did Jesus do with the water? Why? (v.9)
- What did this sign show about Jesus? (v.11)
- What did it cause in His disciples? (v.11)
Gospel Connection: Jesus as creator of all (Col. 1:16) displays His control over the creation and turns water into wine. This symbolically speaking connects to the gospel. It shows God s heart and power for transformation. What Jesus did to the water is what God has been and is doing in the hearts of all who would trust Him. Through faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ He transforms people from death to life, He turns them into a new creation. The transformation of the water to wine was a physical representation of the kingdom to come.
Memory Verse: This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. John 2:11
